Kurashiki Bikan Historical Quarter – Okayama, Japan

26 January 2017.

After lunch, we continued to our next stop, Kurashiki Bikan Historical Quarter. This district is easily accessible from Okayama City via a short train ride.

Kurashiki Bikan has a canal running through it, with many storehouses along the canal that were used to store grains and other products that were transported via the waterways during the Edo period.

The storehouses are still in use, some are shops and some have been converted to museums.

In warmer weather, you can enjoy a boat ride along the canal while wearing kimonos / yukatas for the full Japanese experience. Your normal clothing is fine too, don’t worry 😄

The storehouses in this district look very traditional, which is a stark contrast to the much more modern cities of Kurashiki and Okayama.

Totoro! 😂

You can purchase interesting souvenirs here, such as the colourful packing tapes and Kibi Dango, Momotaro-themed mochi that are Okayama specialties.

Regretfully, we did not spent as much time as we should have in Kurashiki Bikan as we were rushing to our next stop.

If I were lucky enough to get another opportunity to visit Okayama again, I am definitely going to give Kurashiki Bikan the time of the day that it fully deserves.
